Fall Foliage Fun!

Finally, it is FALL! After this very hot and dry summer, I am thrilled to feel cooler temperatures and to see leaves starting to change colors. I have dusted off one of my favorite fall books, Why Do Leaves Change Color? by Betsy Maestro, to read with my children.

This is a terrific book to help your children discover why leaves change colors and fall off trees. This book also provides some wonderful craft ideas to help your family get in to the fall spirit, such as leaf rubbings and leaf pressings. Enjoy!

CWDkids & Kenya

You may remember the story about Matt, a local Richmond man who made a trip to a rural village in Kenya last year. He, along with a group from Koins For Kenya, built two water cisterns which now provide clean drinking water to the primary schools in the village. We were so impressed with this organization and how they are helping the children of Kenya, that we donated several boxes of tee shirts, dresses, shoes, and sun hats.

We were thrilled when we were sent us a few photos of the precious children proudly wearing the clothing from CWDkids. We were told that the children were very happy with their new clothing and there were "big smiles all around".

Comfortable Jeans??

Who really puts comfortable ever in the same sentence as jeans? Well, we can!

We have found the most comfortable pair of jeans for your little girl. We are already hearing rave reviews from customers about these new black jeans by Mulberribush. Our jeans are made from the softest french terry material and sewed to look like jeans with contrast stitching and grommets on the pockets. They have an elastic waist and are as comfortable as yoga pants but look like jeans. (Now all I want to know is .... where can I get a pair of these jeans??)

Weeknight Dinner Dilemma!

School is well underway and afternoon sports have just started up. For me, it is always a battle to keep my family balanced when our afternoons start to get busy. I find it to be a juggling act for me as well as my children to stay organized when time is limited.

I find it very difficult to make dinner on busy nights. After too many trips through the drive-thrus, I have found that planning my dinners for the week on Sunday night seems to be the best way to prevent my car from veering in to the closest fast food restaurant. What is my secret? I get help from a few of my favorite blogs. I enjoy reading Eat At Home and The Picky Palate blogs. I know there are so many other sites that are terrific. Friday's Frightening Fashion Find!

The Store Is Open!

My youngest son set up a store in his room yesterday. He had accumulated a variety of items to sell, from bookmarks to coupons. He made a sign for his room door which is absolutely priceless. He proclaimed that everything in his store was being sold for under $1.11! (I really have NO idea where he came up with this amount) He also told his customers that they should NOT enter his store if he was asleep. You have to love a child who does not want to be woken up!

I am not sure what he had in mind. Did he think customers would be beating down his door late in to the night; especially, since his only customers were his parents. Unfortunately, his brother and sister refused to visit his store as they proclaimed loudly that most of his items were theirs and they should not have to buy back their own things. They did have a point, but really, who could turn down such imaginative and cute entrepreneur!

Pokemon and Spelling?

My eight-year-old son is obsessed with Pokemon trading cards. (In case you do not know what they are, Pokemon cards are a collectible card game started in 1996 in Japan.) My son loves to trade the cards with friends and studies them late in to the night. I truly do not understand his fascination. The cards that seem to cost a fair amount of money as you are lured in to buying pack after pack to attain the "best" cards. This means you end up purchasing a lot of not so great cards in search of the elusive top cards.

I could not believe it when my son hopped in to my car last week and told me that his Pokemon cards had really helped him on his spelling test. I was dumbfounded that these cards had any educational value and asked him how these Japanese cards had helped him on his English spelling test. He proudly informed me that several of the harder words on the test were similar to the names on his Pokemon cards. He was thrilled that his Pokemon habit had helped him at school. He also knew that I would most likely be happy to buy him a few more packs of cards as they now could be deemed educational!

The original Preppy Handbook author, Lisa Birnbach, is BACK with her latest necessity for preppies everywhere. Yesterday, True Prep was released and it looks like we may need to dust off our madras and duck shoes.
