This Weeks Fave's

Ashley: You may not want to hear this.....eating movie popcorn is equivalent to eating 3 hamburgers or 12 tablespoons of butter. Yikes! And to think, I thought popcorn was the healthy option for a movie snack. Click here to read the whole depressing truth about movie popcorn.

Kara: Don't have time to exercise? Believe it or not, you are already working out each day as ta parent. Click here to find a humorous way to make your daily routines a workout!

Tracy: I cannot believe Thanksgiving is next week. Each year, I like to try out one new recipe. This year, I found a scrumptious sweet potato recipe on Paula Deen's blog. I think it will be a hit!

Terrific Thanksgiving Read-Aloud

It is tough to find a great Thanksgiving children's book; however, Albert's Thanksgiving by Leslie Tryon is a true find. My mother sent my kids this book a few years back and it has become their favorite Thanksgiving book.

It is a funny tale about Albert the duck and Patsy Pig and their endeavors to get ready for the best Thanksgiving feast since 1621. You and your children will have a ball reading about all of the tasks Albert the duck must complete to satisfy the ever-demanding Patsy Pig!

Ashley: I love this blog post from Unplug Your Child about what to do with leftover Halloween candy. Show your kids that they can share by mailing extra candy overseas to American troops who will pass it out to local children. Click here for the mailing address and to find other great extra candy ideas.

Kara: A friend sent me this YouTube link of the Black Eyed Peas performing for the Oprah show in Chicago this past September. How did I miss this? (maybe because I was home with a newborn?). If you have not seen this yet check it out, it is SO COOL!

Tracy: My daughter is going to be thrilled when she reads this article! According to Spanish researchers, regular consumption of chocolate skim milk reduces inflammation in your arteries. Click here to read all about it.

Just Say Cheese!

I have to admit there is one part of the holidays that I do not like. In fact, I actually dread. What is it?? Taking my holiday photograph! Who came up with this idea? I bet they did not have three children and a dog! Last year was a particularly, tough year. My repeated attempts to capture the perfect family photo ended in defeat. I could not take a good picture. I surrendered and took my photo after the New Year and sent out a Happy New Year Card.

This year, I was determined to not have this problem again. What did I do differently? I began using my digital camera on January 1, 2009. I just knew that one photograph would have to work if I just kept taking pictures throughout the year. I am happy to let you know that I was successful and will be using a photograph that I took on my trip to Yellowstone National Park this summer.

If you have put off taking your family photo this year, click here for some great tips. I found some good suggestions that will seem obvious, but I never seem to remember to do, such as making sure you have enough film, new batteries, or an empty memory card before you start your family photo shoot. You will also find tips from a professional who suggests not using a flash indoors but using a flash outdoors.

We would love to see your holiday photographs. If your children are dressed in CWDkids’ clothing, please post your pictures on our Facebook page. Your photos will be entered in to our monthly drawing for a $100 gift certificate.
Good luck!

Make A Thanksgiving Box!

I saw this idea on the No Time For Flashcards Blog recently and loved it. This creative blogger made a Thanksgiving Box with her son. She had her son decorate a shoe box and labeled it: I am thankful for..... She encouraged her family members to fill up the box with notes of what they are grateful for this holiday season.

I am planning on making my own Thanksgiving Box and having my family fill it with their special notes of what they are thankful for. I think that it will be lots of fun to read the notes during our Thanksgiving dinner and have everyone try to guess who wrote the note! This should be a fun activity to keep all ages entertained throughout dinner.

Swine Flu - Take 2!

I feel like I am starring in the movie Groundhog Day at my house! Two weeks ago, my daughter was sick with the swine flu. She missed an entire week of school, but the rest of the family somehow made it through not catching the virus. I thought I had dodged a bullet of three children out of school and in bed for a week. I breathed a sigh of relief....until yesterday afternoon when my oldest son started to cough and complain of the chills. I knew I was in trouble. I told myself it was probably strep throat or it could just be a cold, but after a quick trip to the doctor to confirm what I already knew, he is in bed with the swine flu.

Once again, I am scrubbing and disinfecting my house. I have quarantined him to his room with movies and a portable DVD player. I am keeping my fingers crossed that I don’t have to relive this sickness again in two weeks with my youngest son… If you have any suggestions of how to keep a thirteen-year-old boy quiet, but entertained, for a few days, please let me know!
