Enjoy Auntie Claus!

It is less than three days until Christmas and my house is filled with excitement. Each night in December, I have been reading one or two of my favorite holiday books to my children. Tonight's selection is one of my favorites, Auntie Claus by Elise Primavera. This book was given to my children by my own special aunt.

It is a fun and colorful book that is told by a stylish and cosmopolitan Auntie Claus who lives most of the year in New York City and a few months up in the North Pole, of course! This auntie has a big secret that her determined niece discovers by the end of the book. I think you and your family will love joining this aunt and her niece on their polar adventure.

Do you have a favorite holiday book? Let us know we would love to hear from you!

Help, There's An Elf On My Shelf!

Has the Elf visited your house this year?!! For the past few years, my daughter has gone nuts over the Elf , this craze was started by the very clever person who created the Elf On A Shelf empire, complete with book, video and Elf. Over the past few Christmases, my daughter has kept me hopping trying to respond to her countless notes to the Elf. I have also had to compete with what her friends’ Elves were doing. According to her, many Elves are leaving gifts on a daily basis, playing tricks, writing letters, and moving all over the house at night. Unfortunately for my kids, our Elf just moves around the house and writes notes back in a foreign language. My son thinks it is Egyptian! He leaves the gift giving to Santa.

As she is now eleven, I secretly was relieved that our Elf days were over… until, my seven-year-old son came home from school frantic that my daughter write the Elf so he would come to our house. Apparently, his second grade friends had all been visited by their Elves and he wanted his Elf to come too. My maternal guilt for my poor neglected third child went in to overdrive.

I searched all over the house and guess what? I cannot remember where I put my Elf. I went to buy a new Elf and add to the millions the Elf On The Shelf writer is making and found the bookstore sold out! I scrambled all over town to find some sort of Elf ,any Elf that could visit our house. I was becoming desperate. Luckily, Marshall’s had something that would work. Last night, my daughter wrote him a note complete with a sprig of our Christmas tree and voila, he appeared this morning. The magic and exhaustion continues!

Ashley: I love this adorable post on how to teach your kids to set a table! Print the cute template as a guide and it becomes a game....almost. This will come in handy for the upcoming holiday!

Tracy: It wouldn't be the holidays without some stress! All the excitement and changes in routine can be stressful for children too. Read this article for tips and techniques on how to keep your kids relaxed and happy during the holidays!

Kara: Not sure how I feel about the fact that some parents are actually using Cesar Milan's (The Dog Whisperer) theories on raising their children. I love Cesar and his simple concepts for pet owners: Be the Pack Leader, and Exercise, Discipline, Affection...but not sure it translates to raising children. I don't know, I could be wrong! Make Your Own Thank You Notes!

I cannot believe that Christmas is only a few weeks away and that my three children will be on vacation next week. Yikes! I have just started to make a list of activities to keep them busy (an NOT glued to the television) over the long break.

I just saw a great idea on Martha Stewart's website to keep them entertained. Click here to learn how to make your own stationery. You will find out how to take your little artist's design and have a rubber stamp made up of their image. Your children can use the stamp to make special holiday thank you notes and personalized paper. Grandparents and special friends will love their creations!

Kara: Every year our neighbors go Christmas caroling with a large group from their church. They go all out with festive attire and candles, it's really beautiful! I spotted this article and thought it had some good tips for caroling with children, plus you can print copies of the lyrics to your favorite holiday songs.

It Is Time For SNOW!

I love December, not only for the holidays, but also for the frosty weather! My children have a ball enjoying the cooler temperatures. They get excited about being outdoors, but they also have fun inside making paper snowflakes. Truthfully, when you live in the sunny state of North Carolina, your best bet is to make your own flakes!

One of my children’s favorite books to read this time of year is Snip, Snip Snow by Nancy Poydar. This is a terrific book about a young school girl who really wants it to snow. A snow storm is supposed to arrive during the school day, but the storm is late to arrive. The girl and her classmates make paper snowflakes while they are waiting and decorate their classroom windows. In the end, the storm does arrive and the children are delighted.

On the last page of the book, there are instructions on how to make your own paper snowflakes. This is a fun book to read to your family when winter weather arrives in your town.

What Are Your Holiday Traditions?

After reading Simple Mom's blog post on creating a holiday tradition, I began to think about the traditions my family enjoys. A few years ago, I started giving my three children new pajamas on Christmas Eve. Sometimes, I match them up, I love these cute pajamas! This year, with a thirteen year old in the house, I will probably select something unique for each them. I love these for my daughter.

Last year, I started a new tradition for my family. I selected a special book for each child and my husband. I wrote a note about why I selected the book and the date. I hope this new tradition will help them build their own special libraries.

Over twenty years ago, my college roommates began exchanging ornaments instead of gifts. Way back then, we did not have any ornaments of our own so we decided it would be fun (and useful) to give each other a new tree ornament each year. Twenty years later, we are still going strong!

What are some of your family traditions? We would love to hear from you!

See Up This Holiday Weekend!

Have you seen the movie Up? This terrific movie has just come out on DVD. It is the perfect movie to be enjoyed by all ages over the Thanksgiving weekend. My family saw this movie over the summer and we loved it.

Up
is a special story about the adventures of a precocious, young boy scout and a very special senior citizen. I cannot wait to see it again on DVD. I know I missed some great moments the first time around.

If you have a crowd coming to your house for the holiday, you will want to pick up a copy of Up for your group to enjoy. I promise it will entertain generations of all ages (and provide a much-needed break from the football games).

Thanksgiving Giveaway Winner

Congratulations to Summer Maple Humphries who said:

"Our family has had a Thanksgiving tradition for many years simply named "The Walk." Rain, sleet, snow, or shine, we all bundle up in the early afternoon (dogs included) and work up an appetite for the evening feast. Lively conversation, blowing leaves, and laughing children... my husband and I announced my first pregnancy on the Thanksgiving walk of 2003 -- such fun!"

So many sweet memories and traditions!! Thank you to everyone for sharing your stories with us, we loved reading them!

Ashley: You may not want to hear this.....eating movie popcorn is equivalent to eating 3 hamburgers or 12 tablespoons of butter. Yikes! And to think, I thought popcorn was the healthy option for a movie snack. Click here to read the whole depressing truth about movie popcorn.

Kara: Don't have time to exercise? Believe it or not, you are already working out each day as a parent. Click here to find a humorous way to make your daily routines a workout!

Tracy: I cannot believe Thanksgiving is next week. Each year, I like to try out one new recipe. This year, I found a scrumptious sweet potato recipe on Paula Deen's blog. I think it will be a hit!

Terrific Thanksgiving Read-Aloud

It is tough to find a great Thanksgiving children's book; however, Albert's Thanksgiving by Leslie Tryon is a true find. My mother sent my kids this book a few years back and it has become their favorite Thanksgiving book.

It is a funny tale about Albert the duck and Patsy Pig and their endeavors to get ready for the best Thanksgiving feast since 1621. You and your children will have a ball reading about all of the tasks Albert the duck must complete to satisfy the ever-demanding Patsy Pig!

Kara: A friend sent me this YouTube link of the Black Eyed Peas performing for the Oprah show in Chicago this past September. How did I miss this? (maybe because I was home with a newborn?). If you have not seen this yet check it out, it is SO COOL!

Tracy: My daughter is going to be thrilled when she reads this article! According to Spanish researchers, regular consumption of chocolate skim milk reduces inflammation in your arteries. Click here to read all about it.

Just Say Cheese!

I have to admit there is one part of the holidays that I do not like. In fact, I actually dread. What is it?? Taking my holiday photograph! Who came up with this idea? I bet they did not have three children and a dog! Last year was a particularly, tough year. My repeated attempts to capture the perfect family photo ended in defeat. I could not take a good picture. I surrendered and took my photo after the New Year and sent out a Happy New Year Card.

This year, I was determined to not have this problem again. What did I do differently? I began using my digital camera on January 1, 2009. I just knew that one photograph would have to work if I just kept taking pictures throughout the year. I am happy to let you know that I was successful and will be using a photograph that I took on my trip to Yellowstone National Park this summer.

If you have put off taking your family photo this year, click here for some great tips. I found some good suggestions that will seem obvious, but I never seem to remember to do, such as making sure you have enough film, new batteries, or an empty memory card before you start your family photo shoot. You will also find tips from a professional who suggests not using a flash indoors but using a flash outdoors.

We would love to see your holiday photographs. If your children are dressed in CWDkids’ clothing, please post your pictures on our Facebook page. Your photos will be entered in to our monthly drawing for a $100 gift certificate.
Good luck!

Make A Thanksgiving Box!

I saw this idea on the No Time For Flashcards Blog recently and loved it. This creative blogger made a Thanksgiving Box with her son. She had her son decorate a shoe box and labeled it: I am thankful for..... She encouraged her family members to fill up the box with notes of what they are grateful for this holiday season.

I am planning on making my own Thanksgiving Box and having my family fill it with their special notes of what they are thankful for. I think that it will be lots of fun to read the notes during our Thanksgiving dinner and have everyone try to guess who wrote the note! This should be a fun activity to keep all ages entertained throughout dinner.
