Submit Your Designs!

Each season, Bethany Shackelford, from Pingorama, works closely with us to create exclusive designs on children's clothing you can't buy anywhere else.

Twenty years ago, Bethany started out doing computer graphics for commercials and moved on to work for NBC doing on-air graphics where she won her first Emmy. After moving to Santa Monica and learning to do 3D textures for movies she won a second Emmy for her work on one of the Star Trek movies and was on the Oscar winning special effects team for “Independence Day”.

About the same time, she started her own company, Pingorama, with a desire to bring to life the animated characters that graced her sketchbooks onto children’s clothing. She picked the name Pingo because in Latin it translates to: “I illustrate, I decorate, I adorn with color”.

Growing up on a horse farm with parents who ran a grooming shop and kennel, Bethany fell in love with animals of all kinds. Horses, dogs, cats, and cows have all made their way onto dresses, tees, and pajamas with Bethany's distinct style.

CWDkids is always looking for new whimsical and creative graphics for our children's clothing. If you are creative and would like to submit your illustrations for consideration, please email us at

CWDkids' Characters

Staff Profile #3- Kara (With CWDkids since 2006)

When I moved to Richmond VA, from New York City, it was....well, let's just say it was a BIG, BIG change. I loved the fast-paced, exciting lifestyle in NY--there's nothing like working at 20 Rock and passing by the Today Show each morning, or grabbing a slice of pizza only to realize you are standing next to John Mayer, then there's the fashion, the world-class restaurants, and walking across the Brooklyn Bridge--but after 5 years in the Big Apple, I was ready to leave my cramped apartment, stretch my arms and breathe the fresh air in the burbs. I wanted to own a home, tend to a yard, grill dinner on the deck, and drive a car. Well, I have all of those things now plus one great husband (who happens to be from Long Island. You can take the girl out of the city...) and, in my opinion, the best Labrador Retriever in the world.

I'm one of the CWDkids "newbies"...I have been here since 2006 as a Marketing Manager responsible for our Internet and catalog marketing, among many other daily tasks. Most recently, I have become one of the contributing writers for this blog. Working at CWD has been challenging, rewarding, and fun, and I love the products we sell! I do not have any children of my own yet, so I tend to spoil my nieces, Julia and Elise, with outfits from CWDkids. (That's a picture of me above, with Julia wearing her favorite CWDkids Ice Cream Dress, at the Atlanta Botanical Gardens). It has been an exciting two years and I am proud to be a member of the CWDkids family. I've seen the company grow and change in a very short time, and I am looking forward to all the exciting projects that I hope to be a part of.

I was a little worried that life in my new town might not be as exciting as it was in NY, but I have learned that if you surround yourself with good people, it doesn't matter where you live, happiness will follow wherever you are.

Kara's Tidbits:
  • My yellow lab is named Berkeley, after the town in which I grew up, Berkeley Heights, NJ.
  • I write with my left hand, but throw a ball, swing a golf club, and even cut with scissors righty.
  • If I could go back in time, I would watch Pierre-Auguste Renoir paint Luncheon of the Boating Party. I just read the book by Susan Vreeland, and I am now obsessed with the painting.

Ahh, the Ease of Elastic

As parents, you know how hard it is to wrangle your little ones into an outfit every morning. We get emails and letters (and now blog comments) from customers all the time telling us how much they appreciate that most of our pants and shorts feature elastic waists.

From cargo shorts to corduroy pants, bike shorts to leggings, click here to see some of our most popular elastic waist styles for boys and girls.

Below are just a few of the most popular reasons customers say they love elastic waists. Let us know if you have any others to add to the list!
  • Easier up and down for potty training

  • Extra room for huskier body types

  • Holds tight on long, lean body types

  • Easier on and off for children with special needs

  • Elastic is more comfortable according to all kids
We also received several comments to our Gold Star Giveaway post from customers who want to see more adjustable waists. Many of the Polo Ralph Lauren and E-Land Kids styles have adjustable waists in some, if not all, sizes. This feature will be noted in the copy when available.

We will keep all of your comments in mind when looking for new styles in the future so keep 'em coming!

Show & Tell Tuesday - Contest Added!

Mulberribush, one of our most popular brands, is going green! What do you think?

David Feinberg, the President of Mulberribush, recently announced that his company is in the process of converting their cotton jersey fabric to 100% certified organic cotton and will gradually produce all their tee shirts from organic cotton.

Susan Feinberg, the head designer and owner of Mulberribush said, “the idea of changing to organic cotton started with a new collection with an environmental theme we designed for spring 2009. We tested the organic cotton for washability, softness and quality. It is a great product. Although organic cotton is more expensive, the benefit to the environment is incredible. As a children’s clothing company we have a responsibility towards our consumer’s (the children) future, to keep the world cleaner.”

Did you know it takes a half a pound of agricultural chemicals to produce a single cotton t-shirt? Cotton is the second most heavily sprayed crop in the world. The chemicals used on conventional cotton are among the most toxic substances used in farming. This highly toxic process contaminates soil, air, wildlife, groundwater – and ultimately drinking water sources. Organic farming techniques and specifically organic cotton- are inherently better for your health, the environment and for future generations to come.

Tell Us What You Think!
  • Would you be willing to pay a couple of bucks more for a certified organic cotton tee?
  • Do you make an effort to buy children’s clothing made from organic cotton?
  • If so, what are some of your favorite brands?
  • We will choose one random winner from all comments to this post (posted as of 6/23) to receive a current Mulberribush tee shirt of their choice.

Gold Star Giveaway Winner

Thank you to everyone who posted a comment. We read all 953 of them! We plan to address many of the comments in future blog posts and also by making some of the changes you suggested to our website, merchandise selection etc.

Drum roll please..... the winner of the 1st Gold Star Giveaway (chosen randomly) is jodee2323 who said:

I noticed in your KidBits newsletter that you support various charities/organizations. It would be nice to have a link to those from your shopping website. As a mother, I try to raise my children to think globally and do what we can to help others. It is good to know that your company thinks the same. When I am shopping, I am more inclined to shop with a company that lets me know what they support, and how I can assist in the cause.

[Jodee2323 - Please email your name and physical address to and we will get the $300 gift certificate out to you immediately! Congrats!]

Also, we noticed that many of you wanted to be able to sort by size, price and brand. You actually already can! (Below are some images of our site.) Simply go to Advanced Search and you can search by size and/or brand. Or choose to sort directly on the sale pages by choosing a specific size in the drop down box and/or clicking on "sort by price", "sort by discount", or "sort by new markdowns". If you have any questions or problems using these features, please feel free to email us at Thanks again for taking the time to submit such terrific ideas!

CWDkids' Characters

Looking for our $300 Giveway?
Details are below in Thursday's post.

Staff Profile #2 - Philip (with CWDkids since the beginning)

With Father’s Day coming up on Sunday, we thought it only appropriate to do our second staff profile on the father of CWDkids, Philip Klaus, Jr. Below is Philip’s perspective on the history of CWDkids.

From left to right: Nathalie, Oliva the King Charles Spaniel, Will, & Bennett
with Granddad Philip

In April 1987, I was heavily involved in both our family’s textile wholesale business and my small chain of children’s apparel retail stores when the textile business began to head in a very different direction. Our distributorship, Richmond Dry Goods, was about to lose two of its largest customers, Caroll Reed and J.C. Penney in the same year.

It was then that I faced a big decision on what direction to take the company. One call from Caroll Reed would prove to be the catalyst for diving into the catalog business. They called me to confirm that they were eliminating children’s apparel from their catalog and something, call it a gut feeling, made me respond with “Can I buy your mailing list?” They said yes, and with those six words the CWDkids catalog was born.

It was not an easy road. While I had a background in sales and my partner, Susan, had experience as a retail buyer for a major retail chain, there was much to be learned including how to photograph the merchandise, print and mail the catalog, predict response and fulfill orders.

That first mailing, I had the contingency plan for a flop, but I was not quite prepared for the influx of orders that began to arrive. In fact, after 2,500 orders were received, we had to shut off the phones and enlist the help of family and friends to help pick and pack the orders that had been placed. We learned a lot from that initial experience and 20 years later, I am proud to say that CWDkids is still going strong.

In those 20 years, my own family has grown as well. My son, Jim, who worked as a teenager in our Small People retail stores, is now President of CWDkids. And my daughter, Ashley is married and has three children of her own. All three grandkids have modeled for the catalog. My own experiences as a father and grandfather as well as those of our loyal staff have helped me stay on top of new trends in the kids market and have made CWDkids more successful than I ever imagined.

To those customers who have been shopping with us since the beginning, thank you for your loyalty. And I hope that those of you who have just begun your families will enjoy shopping with us for many years to come.

Philip’s Tidbits:
  1. I am an avid golfer. My favorite course that I have played has to be Grandfather Mountain Golf Club in Linville, NC. It is unbelievably beautiful and an incredibly challenging 18 hole layout.
  2. My favorite activity with my grandkids is our annual family beach week at Hilton Head. I wouldn't miss if for anything!
  3. For anyone just starting a business, the advice that I would give would be to follow your gut, have great people to work with and don't give up. The road is not easy... if it was there would be more people on it.

Lovin' Lilly

We came across this article in one of the trade publications that we read, Women’s Wear Daily. Like you, we love Lilly Pulitzer's fresh take on classic, preppy clothing. Her colorful designs are a must have for spring and summer--you can spot the timeless fun of a “Lilly” in a crowd every time.

We know that many customers are fans of our Lilly merchandise, so we thought we would share the clip here in our blog... as well as links to some great new Lilly Pulitzer items that have just been added to

LILLY'S MOMENT: It's been only about a week since Lilly Pulitzer left the hospital in Palm Beach, Fla., after an undisclosed illness, and no one thought she'd feel well enough to attend her brand's 50th anniversary celebration on Friday night at The Breakers. But the feisty 77-year-old proved her Lilly-obsessed guests wrong when she decided to pop in at the last minute. "Damn it, I'm coming," she told company president James Bradbeer. Dressed in a pink and white printed wrap top and white pants, Pulitzer proudly waved to the cheering crowd in the ballroom, before taking her seat. Guests at the event couldn't wait to have their pictures taken with her as they lined up near her chair. Pulitzer happily smiled for photos before heading home after dessert.

CWDkids Care Contest Runner-up

Our recent contest, CWDkids Care, was a big success! The contest was started to recognize children who are making a positive change in the lives of others. We received entries from all over the country and were thrilled with the response! It is amazing what a child can do with the support of their parents, family, friends, neighbors, schoolmates, and teachers. Thank You to all who entered--we read every submission and were touched by each and every one of your stories.

We will be featuring profiles on each of the 4 finalists and the contest winner in the weeks to come.

Runner-Up: Jonathan from Barboursville, WV is helping his church help the people of Peru.

Each summer a group from Jonathan's church, First Presbyterian of Huntington, travel to a small village in Peru to help build, paint, and repair buildings, hold Bible school for the children, and offer free medical clinics. Jonathan is too young to go to Peru so he found another way to help. He created a cookbook called H.U.G.S. (Help Us Give Support). Jonathan contacted "famous" people and asked them to send him a copy of their favorite recipe. The response was great! Just to name a few...Chuck Yeager, Jimmy Carter, Marie Osmond, Leeza Gibbons, Dick Clark, and Jay Leno sent Jonathan a recipe for H.U.G.S. To date, over $3300 has been raised through sales and donations. All proceeds go to the First Presbyterian Church of Huntington, Peru Fund. In Jonathan's honor, CWDkids made a donation to the Peru Fund to further their good work.

Congratulations Jonathan, you are a inspiration and a role model, and we are so proud of you!

20 (and a half) Years and Counting!

CWDkids company photo

Almost 21 years ago in the fall of 1987, our CEO, Philip Klaus mailed the first CWDkids catalog. He had a contingency plan if the children's clothing catalog flopped but he had not thought much about what he would do if it were a success. Luckily for all of us (pictured above at our company birthday party in 2007), the response was overwhelming (they actually had to turn off the phones to stop the influx of orders after that initial mailing). We have been steadily growing ever since, adding our website, in 1996 and our newest baby, this blog, kidbits just this week.

Though we do have some recent hires (the last one started in 2007), many of us have been here for the milestone 5 or 10 years, and several members of our staff have been here from the beginning (we will let you guess who). Each of us would tell you that there is truly a family atmosphere in our corporate offices… in fact, Jim Klaus, Philip’s son, took over as President in 1995. Over the next couple of months we plan to profile our employees so that you can get a glimpse into the glamorous (ok, not really) world of children’s fashion!

Until then, we thought you might like to know a few fun facts about CWDkids:

#1 - Our first catalog was actually called Children's Wear Daily... but someone threatened to sue us so we changed it to Children's Wear Digest for the second mailing and it has been shortened to CWDkids so you won't have to type as much to visit us on the web!

#2 - We came up with our motto, "Dressing Kids Like Kids" as a result of customer comments. We hear from so many people who shop with us because we offer age appropriate clothing for children that it was a no-brainer!

#3 - We still offer the Lacoste polo shirt that was on the cover of our first catalog... although the price has jumped a bit from $17.50 to $45.00 (sorry)!

#4 - We celebrate every employee birthday with cake. Multiple birthdays in a month get pizza too!

#5 - Our most recently hired employee is forced to don an elf hat and hand out our Secret Santa gifts at our company Christmas extravaganza... this year, it was our CFO, Tracey (she won't admit to it, but she loved it)!

Thank you for letting us be a part of your family for the last twenty years. We look forward to getting to know you even better!

Please comment with stories about your family’s experiences with CWDkids.

We’re always thrilled to hear from both old customers (those of you who grew up in our clothes and have now started buying for your little ones) and new customers (those of you who may have just recently stumbled upon us online).

Tuesday, June 3, 2008

Show and Tell Tuesday - We Show, You Tell!

Help us pick the next catalog cover....tell us what you think!

We are deciding between these three covers and would love your feedback.

Leave a comment and vote for your favorite (you can click on the image to get a closer look). Make sure to post "top", "middle", or "bottom" in your comment. Then look for your copy in the mail around July 4th!

If We Blog It, They Will Come (hopefully)

Welcome to kidbits, a look into our daily life at CWDkids. We hope to give you an insider's seat in our office - a behind the scenes, bird's eye view of who we are and what it's like to put together our website and catalog.

We may not be as funny as the office at Dunder Mifflin, but then again, we're real people in Richmond, Va without the benefit of screen-writers.
We're going to bring you extensive, soul-searching profiles of our employees... or at least show you goofy pictures of what we all looked like back in the 80's to keep you laughing.

We'll be posting from a different cubicle every day starting June 2 so check back often for more riveting details about us, our vendors (like Anita G, Mulberribush, Sara's Prints, Sweet Potatoes, Wes & Willy), and our endeavors.

But please don't think our blog is a one way street! We want our blog to be a place that we can interact with you, our customers. We want your feedback! We will be posting merchandise previews, polls and an array of other new ideas for your input so that we can make CWDkids the best kid's clothing website around!

In exchange for your time and effort in making comments to our posts, we will periodically be doing giveaways, sweepstakes, and posting information on secret sales and coupons just for our blog readers!

Look for the first surprise next week... You won't want to
miss it... It's a good one!

So bookmark kidbits and be sure to check back in with us every week. We are so excited to get started!
